# On the versatility of a loud bag

When people ask what I get requested for most, they expect me to name a black dress.

It's this bag.

The Bon Bon in fuchsia satin, silk fringe going from hot pink at the top to pale pink at the tips. On paper, it's a once-a-year piece — the kind of object you build a single evening around and put away. I bought it secondhand knowing full well what it was, and knowing full well I would wear it anyway.

What I did not expect was that it would leave my closet almost every month.

It goes out to rehearsal dinners and to birthdays and to downtown restaurants and to uptown openings. It comes back and I send it out again. Every time, it has been to a different kind of night — and every time, from what the borrower tells me afterward, it has been the thing people noticed.

The thing about a colorful accessory is that it does the work a colorful outfit is supposed to do, without the commitment. A black slip. A bone-white column. A plain dark trouser and a plain white shirt. Put one loud, joyful object next to any of them and you have made a whole look. The bag is the sentence. Everything else is the margin.

That is most of styling, in a line. Not the addition of more. The confidence to let one thing be the point.
